Hi,I want to mount a brake on my sidecar wheel, some advice would be great, do I mount one calipper run off front and rear or off one or the other, or two calippers, one run off the front and one off the rear, will I need a proportioning valve ? Thanks for any ideas, regards Steve Question

I think you'll find as many opinions on this as there are members on the forum.

On my K11 / EML rig I have two calipers on the sidecar barke, one connected to the front and one to the rear. I thought about proportinoning valves but hooked them up with out. The calipers I used on the sidecar were off the rear of Suzuki 600 GXRs and are enough smaller then the fronts (off of Suziki 1200 Bandit) or the stock BMW rear that it worked out. Using the front brake only the rig stops straight. Adding the rear brake will cause a slight pull to the right.

On the R80 / EML is used a VW master cylinder hooked to the rear brake pedal to work brakes on all three wheels, on that one I did use proportioning valves on the rear and sidecar brake. I did this for my wife to ride the rig, she doesn't have fingers on her right hand, other wise I wouldn't have done this.

My Hannigan HPS came with a single disc brake, not sure what it is off of.
I have it linked to my rear brake. Very Happy

I have two brake pedals. The bike's stock one and one I built. The stock pedal operates the bike's rear caliper (which I've drilled to operate all three pistons at once)as normal but also makes contact with adjustable linkage that applies the sidecar brake. The second pedal operates the sidecar caliper through its own master cylinder. Applying front lever and stock rear pedal gives straight stops when adjusted correctly. Applying sidecar only braking on right turns and fast sweepers really helps going right, but takes some learning to get right.
Many different ways to build these fun machines.
