I posted this on the ADV web site but thought you dog lovers might enjoy this story also. The attached picture is of Augie and Janet in our Yamaha GTS with Sidebike Mega Comete, but at the time of this story we had a Kawasaki Ninja 1000 with Terraplane sidecar that had standard front forks.

Because we were going on a short ride I didn’t bring my wheelchair but we did stop at a little fish camp / store by a nearby lake. As soon as we stopped Augie and Janet climbed out of the sidecar to stretch their legs and three or four dogs immediately came running up to greet Augie. Not knowing how the dogs would get along both Janet and my attention was focused on the current dog sniffing Augie’s butt. Thankfully they all got along well but just before climbing back into the sidecar a leak was noticed at the front of the bike that I was sure was a blown fork seal or (yikes) a leaking brake caliper. Because I didn’t have my wheelchair I had Janet dip her finger in the puddle transferring it to me so I could rub it between my fingers and smell it to determine if it was oil leaking from the forks or brake fluid.

I know you are much smarter than either of us and have already figured out that while we were preparing to protect Augie if the need arose, somebody was at the front of the bike lifting their leg. I am not sure if anyone saw us but can you imagine what they though of two idiots sticking their fingers in a dog’s puddle, rubbing it between their fingers and smelling it. Come on, don’t laugh ----- at least I didn’t taste it!!!
