hi, not sure if my rig is 'high performance', but i am aiming to improve her and her handling, believe that she is an early saluki siderider, having a seperate chassis and boxy wheel arch, as you can see its attached to my ever faithfull vmax, which has been modified, all billet work was done by myself on night shift in my last place of work, 2 inch over stock 2 piece swinging arm, and up front my own attempt at leading links, over the last winter i had an an attempt at making CHS, but could not get an efficient front brake, my eventual aim is to have car tyres all round,CHS and improve the sidecar suspension(trailer type at moment)but at moment she is in regular use mainly carrying my daughter or beer and camping gear to a bike rally
this is my CHS, but is going to be redesigned

Hi There Gazza,
Warm Welcome to the HPSC Clan Buddy .. nice to see you.
Hummm .. North East of England and a name like Gazza might put you in the Newcastle area I guess .. don't suppose you know Cheryl Cole by any chance
Your not too far from anywhere and reasonably close to a couple of other Brit Members. I'm a bit further south of you ... I live in Denia on the Costa Blanca in Spain .. I'm a Brummy really .. so we should struggle quite well with the accents
Your Rig looks well cool and quite interesting .. one or two 'Sidecar Rig Engineering' type points in there that I recon might just start a nice new little debate.
One thing really is for For Sure the Yellow and Black paint job will be Very Popular with Sidecarkeith and his good lady wife Anne .. they are just down the road from you in Costa Del Leeds ;o)
More as we go Dude .. again a Warm Welcome _________________ Stay Safe ;o) |

Welcome to the forum Gazza!
"not sure if my rig is 'high performance'"
Well it is a Vmax!
I see a lot of clever stuff going on there. Your LL is particularly interesting. I don't think I've ever thought of doing it exactly like that. What are the external fork springs from? There used to be a couple of those sidecars at the rallies in Ontario and Quebec Canada. Quite rare in North America.

cheers for the welcome
the external spring are the original rear ones, there is no internal springs as to weak due to leverage,
believe that there was only 400 saluki sideriders made, and they went out of business in the 80's,the bodywork is symetrical, allowing it to be fitted to both left and right hand of bike, |

Gazza welcome and sorry for the late welcome.
What a wonderful colour scheme, who did the paint job ?
My friend as one of those saluki's his is strapped to a bemmer, the paintwork isn't as good as yours.
Not seen you around, where do you ride out and who sits in the chair ?

Hope we can meet up soon it's only an hour or so from each other, you may know somewhere in the middle.

Gazza, the Saluki sidecars I saw over here were mounted very low to the ground. The owners were careful at rallies not to bottom them out. Is yours on a different chassis or were there different models?
Also, your CHS looks quite stout! I'm curious what the front wheel turns about. Does the spindle use ball joints, a kingpin?? any pictures of that part?

hi bill, this is a pic of a saluki that i have helped in fitting to a 600 bandit, it has a different lower section, the chassis is moulded into the fibreglass, rounded wheel arch and a 10" wheel, this seems to sit lower to the ground than mine, possibly the same type as the ones you have seen, think i might have gone wrong in fitting a 15" wheel to mine, but didn't like the original wheel and had the 15" laying about in garage
talking of stuff laying about i had the front swinging arm off a reliant robin in my front yard, this is a very basic 3 wheeled car that can be driven on bike licence in uk, and i had this idea about using parts from this to create my front end, using trail and error, and basic knowledge i managed to achieve a steerable front suspension, this uses a king pin as its pivot, this pic shows my swinging arm mid way thru build,
i was planning on having another go over the next winter and was searching internet for ideas, and using google images kept returning to this forum, so have joined in the fun,
suppose i should mention that i enjoy having a go at making as much as possible, i am not in a position to just write a cheque and buy what ever i want, hence creating my own leading links from original forks,
i did a thread on britchopper forum, hope to get input as i went along but was probably in wrong place at the time

Hi There Gazza,
All very interesting this .. just as I expected there are a lot of guys asking you all kinds of questions already.
Personally .. I'm a little bit curious to know why you've exchanged the Merlin Chair for the Saluki ?
That paint job really does look good .. I can almost feel the thickness of that shine )

"i had the front swinging arm off a reliant robin in my front yard,"
an unlikely occurrence in the states. Thanks for the link and great pictures.
It appears the kingpin is vertical which is a great start in your CHS. No need to compensate for steering inclination, just build in some caster and get the kingpin in the middle of the wheel and start welding.
I wonder how many degrees of movement that spindle has. I recall that we get about 14 degrees in each direction of our C14/ZX14 CHS. Have you thought about adding a swaybar to your outfit?
Glad you've joined the forum. It's great to see this kind of contribution along with the recent posts from M@kke. It all adds to making this site a reference for people interested in these kind of sidecars.

mmm, long story cut as short as possible, wife left me and i had no car licence, learnt to drive myself, needed car asap as merlin was no good for carrying little one in bad weather(she was only 3 at the time), sold merlin to free up some cash, missed sidecar so hunted for one, idea of a roof seemed wise as weather is getting damp here to say the least, saluki turned up on ebay and was local, i was then made redundant but progress was made to saluki but on tight budget, now i am back on my feet, working, i have a car, vmax outfit and a zxr 750 streetfighter, my aim now is to improve handling but keeping saluki practical |
