I recently had an 08 Hannigan Astro Sport installed on my 2000 ST1100. This was done due to a massive heart attack last October and my determination to ride to Alaska and tour Canada this summer. An Aussie friend, Don Seedsman is flying over to join me on this tour. At this point in time I an still very much a novice hack driver, after over 50 years of bike riding, a whole different world! We are leaving June 5th and expect to get back around August 25th. One decision I am still trying to make is what kind of tires to put on the bike. I am trying to find the longest wearing tires and do not plan to put car tires on as this would require changing the wheels. Can anyone give any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any hellp. My email is geneboro@bellsouth.net

Hi Gene,
Welcome to the forum.
I do not have a lot of experience with motorcycle tires on sidecars.
Some one you may want to contact is Doug Bingham of Side Strider Sidecars.

Hello Gene,
Again, welcome to the forum, and also again, I can't really help with information on what tires to use. But, I can tell you that you're going to have a great trip, and it sounds like you're going to have plenty of time to see a lot of beautiful scenery, wildlife, lots of other bikers on the road, and (my favorite part) 24 hours of daylight, if you're in the Yukon and Alaska by late June and early July.

I made the trip last summer with my Hannigan Bandito (Suzuki Bandit-based). A few pictures can be found on the Pictures/Photos page under the title Bandito's trip to Alaska. I was running with car tires, started the trip from home in New York with new tires, and still have plenty of tread left. A friend riding with me left from here on a BMW GS with brand new Michelin Anakee dual purpose tires; we replaced the rear tire on that bike after about 9000 miles, (maybe could have gone another 1000 on that tire, but we had to replace another bike's rear tire at that point, and I had the replacement in the sidecar, so we changed them both the same day). Another friend from S Carolina, riding a BMW RT, met up with us near Minneapolis Mn, where he had just gotten 2 new tires (not sure what tires - maybe one of the Bridgestone Battleaxe sport touring types) on his bike. He was ready to replace tires on the way back in Calgary, after about 7000 miles.

You probably have some idea of what you would get with "normal" sport touring type tires on the ST- I'm not sure what the addition of the sidecar will do to that, but you can bet you're going to be replacing tires along the way. There are plenty of bike shops in the cities in southern Canada, but as you head north, they get fewer and farther between. You'll find shops in Edmonton and Whitecourt Alberta, and in Whitehorse in the Yukon, but then nothing more till you get into Alaska. Fairbanks and Anchorage both have a selection of shops available. I would suggest guessing where you think you might be needing tires (based on the total lack of real information that we have offered from this forum so far), looking up shops in that area and calling ahead to check if they normally would have the size/type of tires you want, or have them order and hold them for you. Or carry them with you.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the ride north; we could take it offline - email or phone if it gets too much for the forum.(BEWARE - I can go on for days talking about it.)
