The other day I was Googling sidecar stuff and came across some sidecar discussion where someone jumped in with the conclusion that 50 mph was pretty much the top safe speed for any sidecar rig. There was also a video I saw, I think on youtube, where after a very short test ride, the operator of a basic rig seemed to say no f#$%&*@ way. I don't know exactly what his thoughts were but I don't think he much cared for his test ride.
HPS aside, what actually sidecar misconceptions have you read or can you find. How about some quotes or links??

That's the big one, I hear it almost anytine I stop. Usually its something like "You wouldn't get me in there, what if it comes off" Mainly I just smile and think "why do you think I'd want you in there" _________________ Mike Currin

From other (2 wheel) bikers:
"Why would you take a perfectly good bike and hang that thing on it?"
Particularly after I tell them my wife STILL won't ride with me. |

I can't find the photo now, but my first winter's round of modifications included an "ACME ejection handle" (parking brake handle) Wiley Coyote style that i had attached to the frame of the sidecar by the driver's right hand side.
Painted garish red and white striped, it was obvious what it was for, even if it wasn't hooked up to anything
The speed thing is also a big misconception - people ask about it's top speed, assuming that it's a sidecar rig and therefore slow - when i tell them 170+ km/h, with 1000 rpm to go, their jaws tend to drop. If we actually go for a ride (them on solo, me leading or trailing, it doesn't matter) .. they've got a fresh new perspective on what a sidecar rig is. _________________ Homebrew '99 Suzuki Bandit 1200 / '88 Hannigan Comet

"I drove one of them things once and it would not turn."
"How does it feel to hold up traffic all the time on the road?" This idiot was on a metric cruiser with a brand new leather jacket on and a girl on the back wearing flip flops. I caught up with him in the twisities later on and stayed on his tail until he turned off. Shoulda passed the jerk in a right hander with the wheel in the air. True story. _________________ Claude Stanley

understand, it has to be something really special to feel comfortable much above that."

One of the NCOs here used to ask when I'd get t take the training wheels off of my bike.
On the other hand, if I'd had the rig in my single days, I think I could have given a lot more sidecar rides than I ever convinced to get on the back of my bike. |

Poof--- gay man
This conception of sidecars must be world wide, I get the same dumb questions over here.
Over here our speed limit is 70 mph on motorway/highways, I usually slow down to that when I see the blue lights on a car roof ahead
I went on a drag strip and managed 140mph over the standing quarter, with my wife in the sidecar, but the timer went on the blink/broke so I got no timings.
I'm not bragging just re enforcing sidecars ain't no snail machines, they go as fast as the owner wants them too.
Love the idea of the red & White striped lever, I may make one out of lightweight wood to go to my local biker cafe with.
