Good Day,
My 5 sidecar outfits include a GL1500/California III, an FJ1200/Hannigan, a GL1100/Dnepr offroad, an XJ750/Sputnik-John Deere-Subaru-Whatever, a CB550F street legal Kneeler. I don't count the pocket bike sidecar outfit hanging on the family room wall because I've never actually ever riden that one but it does add a bit of suitable atmosphere to the room. After I retired as a mechanic a few years ago I became full time involved in my hobby. It quickly became apparent though that I could only afford the time, space and cost of maintaining a limited number of rigs so I soon found myself satisfying my craving by building outfits for other people. I also build my own wheels and front ends, etc. The GL1500 rig works very well in corners to the point that it is fun to embarrass sport bikes with something so clearly touring oriented but it loses out on straightaway aierodynamics. The FJ1200 outfit is only a tick quicker in corners but has a better top speed. The Gl1100 (Dirtwing) is the most experienced with 470,000 kilometers on it. In it's most recent configuration it is built to blast down backroads and across pastures, etc. while offending the satin jacket set by turning up at the odd Goldwing ride. A new GEM final drive intended to improve its acceleration further is resting beside the computer as we speak. Hopefully, next week will see it in the bike. The XJ750 rig started out as an XJ650 and a bunch of misc. parts laying around the basement and backyard that somehow grew into a rig one winter. The Vintage CB550 kneeler rig was an Ebay find that got streetefied with some considerable modification and upgrading. Unfortunately, the engine trashed last fall and it's now sitting in storage waiting for a useable CB550 or 650 engine to come along. Some photos can be seen at http://www.sidecar.com/megabbs/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=23 and http://www.sidecar.com/megabbs/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=24

Howdy Norm:
Took you long enough to find the site, i'm sure you've got lots of valuable input/advice on offer.
For the other's, Norm's FJ1100/Hannigan rig is what inspired (cursed?) me from the outset of my project. Norm's Hannigan is of the same mold-lot as mine, and when i first started out on the rocky path of building my rig up in 2003, his outfit gave me the inspiration to not give up on the apparent mis-match. _________________ Homebrew '99 Suzuki Bandit 1200 / '88 Hannigan Comet

Thank you Bill,
I've read some of your posts in the archive and it's great to see that you're getting so much entertainment and challenge out of your Bandit/Hannigan. I don't know how I didn't trip over this site before. It is loaded more toward technical discussion here and that is the type of discussion I enjoy. It'll take a while to get through the archive which has so far proved to be very interesting.
Regards,
Norm |
