I was working some bugs out of my rig today. Wanted to disable the right hand side directionals of the motorcycle and only use the sidecar ones. When I disconnected them the sidecar directional blinked very fast. Not drawing enough watts I guess. If I put one bulb back on the motorcycle it then would blink fine. Anybody have a remedy for this? Tried a resistor on the motorcycle, this worked briefly then melted. I covered the bulb with aluminum foil for now.

Hello Postie, Did you use the right side turn wires from the bike to the sidecar?? I have small bulbs in the sidecar and they blink a little faster than the left but has been working for 2 years. hehe but my guess is you won't be able to stand that _________________ "So Soon Old & So Late Smart" |

Mine blink faster too Bill. I was planning to switch over to an automotive flasher unit so different flashers could be tried. Still may do so if ambition permits.

You’re right of course; it’s the little things…

I was hoping for a high tech solution to this problem.

Just a guess or two.
If you use a resistor, its going to have to be a big one to draw the same current as the bulb. If you have a guess on the wattage I'll cypher it for you. ( If you assume the tail light is 10 watts, that's .83 amps at 12 volts, so you would need a 14.5 ohm resistor that is rated at 10 watts. The typical radio shack resistor is a half or quarter watt, which explains why it melted. You could paralell 20 half watters to get the needed dissapation.)
Tin foil over the bulb might be the answer.
Plus if you've ever followed behind Ralph, its kind of like a moving pinball machine, all those flashing brake and turn signals. _________________ Mike Currin

The bulb I'm replaceing is rated at 25 watts. _________________ Bill

I'd leave the aluminum foil on the bulb, or go to a comparable bulb on the chair. A 25 watt resistor is going to get pretty big. _________________ Mike Currin

Yes, I think your right.
I have some foil type duct tape. I plan on applying it to the inside of the directional lens.
Thanks.

I applied the tape to the inside of the direction lens.
Works great.

Hey guys, go to the parts store and spend $8 or so for a Tridon EL12 electronic flasher, and it'll compensate for whatever combination of bulbs and signals you want to run, and it'll restore your flash rate to some degree of normalcy --Todd _________________ Mas Tequiza! |
