Sunday evening, after almost everyone else (except bruce in pa18105 and wife) had left Maggie Valley, Cody (eldest son) and Miranda (his girlfriend) tried to start a fire in the pit at the Applecover using some gasoline. He was life flighted to Mission Hospital in Asheville, by the time we got there he was being prepped for transport to the burn center at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Long story short he's going to be OK. First and second degree burns on 13% of his body (neck, chest, both hands) some third degree on neck and right hand. Tomorrow (6/29/11) he goes for skin graft on neck. Burns on right hand are small, taking a wait and see approach on them.

No one else was hurt.

We left so fast the rig, bike and trailer are still at the Applecover, got home without even our toothbrushes.

Will update as conditions improve.

Mike

That is terrible, shocking news.
Good to hear he will be OK.

The skin graft surgery went well.

Turns out the burns were worse than was thought, about 85% of the 13% had to have grafts. They took skin from a large portion of both thighs.

I hear that hurts almost worse than the burns.

He's knocked out cold right now and will be for at least another day.

Thjngs are going well.

Yesterday I helped (mainly stayed out of the way and handed things to people) change the dressings. They tell me the grafts look great, not how I would describe them, but never seen a graft that new before.

He's still knocked out, they are trying to keep him still so the grafts do not get damaged.

more in a couple days

Mike

PM sent,

(I'm a little concerned with posting the address here, if anyone else wants it, let me know and I'll send it as a PM.)

No real changes since yesterday, still out cold.

The burn unit is really full now, they say it always picks up over the 4th.

All good news so far.

The breathing tube is out, he managed to get out of bed and stand up for a short while. Still trying to get out from all the sedation, he's fading in and out and not talking. (The one nurse says he evidently hasn't been doing all hard drugs or his body would be more use to this and would come to sooner)

The doctor who did the skin grafts says they look great and that he should be good to return to college in the fall. He also says its the power of youth, if it been one of us old geezers it would take months to get where he is now.

Things still going good. Cody's been up and walking. Still in the ICU part of the burn center. He's having trouble talking and can not swallow, probably be due to having breathing tube in for 2 and 1/2 weeks. Waiting on the ear nose and throat doc to look at him. More as things change.

Cody is now eating pureed food and talking much better, still horse and low volume. Now able to walk around the burn unit on his own.

Hopefully will be on real food by the end of the week.
