This winter I developed a bad case of "while I'm there."
Not the first time I've had this problem. A friend says I should join a twelve step program for fabricators. The first step is to admit that I have a perfectly fine motorcycle and I should leave it alone. But what fun would that be?
Anyhow this started out as adding relays for the headlights. BMW's seem to gain a lot by adding relays and heavier gauge wire.
Also involved is a plan to try and reduce the amount of play in the steering linkage, but that will be another thread.
Then I decided I might as well add circuits for driving and fog lights while I'm at it.
So first step I added a European headlight switch, which has three positions, all lights off, running lights, and running and headlights. Then modified the harness so that the lights are still on all the time and the running light switch position will turn on the fog lights and the headlight position will turn on both fog and driving lights.
Next step was to figure out where to mount 4 (high beam, low beam, driving, fog) headlight relays, and might as well add a relay to turn off all the other accessories I've added (intercom speedometer healer, blue neon under the sidecar.)
Step three, might as well add an extra fuse panel.
For the last several years I've been running an AGM battery that is somewhat smaller than the stock battery. I made a plywood spacer to take up the extra room in the battery pan. Also the ABS I brain was removed during the last bout of while I'm there disease.
(I still have both ABS pumps is someone wants to make an offer.)
Step four, so all I had to do was rig a relay box to fit in that space.
Step five, ordered a few relays and odds and ends from Eastern Beaver
This is what I came up with
It fits in behind the battery. Its been tested just need to clean a few things up before its mounted.
Bought just a cheap Pepboys driving light, and have dropped a drawing off at the local machine shop to have a bracket plasma cut. Still haven't figured out where I'm going to put fog lights, but that will be another step
Will post more pictures of that when its done and mounted. _________________ Mike Currin
