How about steering from an eccentric on the steering column?
the cam would steer only at acute angles (low speed), and would leave the wheel straight in all other conditions. Seems like a decent dampener would take care of most bump steer issues.
I'd think that fractional (ackerman) steering might have some benefits...
But wouldn't the tire slip angle be different depending on turning left or right?

>>I'd think that fractional (ackerman) steering might have some benefits<<
Ackerman says that the tire on the inside of the turn turns around the radius of the turn it is rolling on as does the tire on the outside of the turn.So on a right hander with a right mounted sidecar the sidecar wheel will turn sharper than the front wheel of the bike and visa versa. I think any turn in the direction of the corner by the sidecar wheel woudl be a good thing in theory.

>>Seems like a decent dampener would take care of most bump steer issues.<<
Bumpsteer is defined as a wheel that steers itself when the suspension moves up and down through 'bump' and 'rebound'.This is related to the suspesnion design itself and shoudl not be confused with a wobble. A damper would only be a bandaid at best when speaking of curtailing bump steer.. It is true that a poorly installed damper could create a bump steer situation but to try and get rid of true bump steer by installing a damper is not really going to happen.

>>But wouldn't the tire slip angle be different depending on turning left or right?<<
Slip angle is the diference between the direction the wheel is pointing and the direction of the contact patch of the tire at the road surface. Some tires allow greater slip angles than other tires. High profile tires will create a more 'forgiving' ride as the limits of traction are obtained than some low profile tires due to the sidewalls taking up the slack so to speak. Ever notice how the low profile tires have a one ply sidewall? That in part is to help them have a better slip angle when pushed hard. In other wordS slip angle for a given tire is related to how much lateral flex there is in the sidewall of the tire.
If all things are the same..if we had the same tire on all wheels the tire that has the most load on it in a turn will be generating the greater slip angle. Greater load = greater slip angle for a given tire within the design limits of that tire of course.
We can manipulate slip angle forces with tire pressure variations, suspenion design and swaybar sizing. The loaded wheel will break loose first as a rule as that tire's slip angle will be maxed out first.
( Often thought of adding a swaybar of sorts between the rear and front suspensions on a CHS rig to allow the whole thing to sqaut under breaking but never got around to it. )
Okay it's someone elses turn now...LOL.
