|
|
I've noticed that the Side-Bike web site has been down for a while.
Does this mean that the company has vanished as well?
It would be a pity, as IMO, they are one of the top sidecar companies in terms of innovation. I know several members here have thier products.
Hopefully its a technical glitch and nothing more.
Ben
BTW: Any of you guys have an RDS rig?
I'd really like to see one up close someday... _________________ 'To invent you need a good imagination and a pile of junk'.

Try this for up close pictures of an install. As far as we know their is at least 4 in the US. CA, KY, FL, and Boston. Two on FJR's and two on Hayabusa's. All or most will likely be in one place June 20th in Maggie Valley NC. _________________ Corret me if I'm wrong, everyone else does! |

On Jan. 8, 2007 Side-Bike was taken over by another Company.
They will continue making sidecars. I will post new web site when it becomes
available.

There is a correction....there are 5 known RDS sidecars. Ralph pointed out that I forgot to count the "Cacoon" that Robin built. _________________ Corret me if I'm wrong, everyone else does! |

Where has that one gotten to?
The other four are out East it would seem... far from here.
Perhaps I can find some excuse for driving to NC in June...
Each winter over the last few years, I've pondered building up the old K100RS in modern HPS form. Unlike the previous, this year I have free access to a machine shop. I exchanged a few emails with Claude and Sheldon about their K-bike rigs in 2005, and I see that another has been completed by a forum member in 2006. Nicely done I'd add...
I'm shopping for wheels (the place to start). This is not a well funded project, so slow to develop. Front end design is still all over the map,
but I see much to admire in the RDS, Wilbo, and Stern executions.
While lurking here, I can see that Bill's CHS is developing quite a following
. Hannigan certainly seems to like it.

If you're interested in seeing these things (and apparently you are), the Maggie Valley gathering is about the best excuse you'll come up with. And then there's the excellent riding in the Smoky Mountains, and the ride across the country to get there, and.... but, hey - just come - no excuses needed. Interested 2 wheel riders are always welcome.
Of course, if what you mean is an excuse to feed a skeptical spouse or something like that - that may be a whole 'nother story. |

Yes, well... I've gotten the go ahead to sock several hundred into getting the project rolling (so to speak) The Carolina trip might involve bringing my 3 year old in the hack, and that may be an overly long trip for the lad Perhaps there is a legitimate use for in-dash DVD players after all
In any case, I've committed to a project, and have penciled an attractive and fairly original design. I will probably have a number of questions in the near future. |

The DVD player in our van has saved our sanity on many road trips, especially the included headphones.

The fifth RDS (Robin's Hayabusa with RDS Cocoon) was sold to Dave Beumbaluskas who lives in Westmont Illinois. Ben, it looks like all the RDS's are still on the east coast but you could change that. We have RDS's phone number is you need it _________________ Doug Miller |

Oops! I forgot that the one you did went out West. So does that still make 5 RDS rigs in the USA or are there others I don't know about? _________________ Doug Miller |

Wow. Thanks for the replies.
As nice as it might be to add another RDS to the US group, this project has a fairly modest budget. It should not be too difficult to complete a rig by early summer. There is a Sputnik frame in the shed, along with a K100 that never gets ridden and some scrap steel tubing...
Mike, I noticed that you mounted a 195/50/ 16 on your K1100 rig.
Any complaints? I'm currently looking at 15's all around, but I can see some advatange to a larger diameter drive wheel. It has been mentioned that there is value to rotating the tires, but there may be greater value in keeping the revs within the designed range for stock gear ratios.
