Very nice, Doc! When do you anticipate you'll be road-testing? Question

Just out of curiosity, what it the maximum width of the footprint of your rig from outside of the sidecar tire to the left side of the bike tires?

Hi Mike,
Nice machine work.
Those wheels look awesome on your rig.
Can't wait to see the finished product.

I can only echo all the "nice work" and "looks good" comments of others, but I do have a couple of questions about the brakes on the sidecar. First, is the sidecar brake linked to the front or rear bike brake,(what is the generally accepted practice?); second, are 2 calipers needed or is the second one a bit of overdesign? I have 2 calipers on one disc on the front wheel of my Hannigan Bandito and I wonder about the heat generated from two calipers heating the disc in heavy braking situations i.e twisty mountain roads.

Hello David,
I'm not the one to ask technical questions but there are plenty of good technical guys in this forum who can supply the answers you seek. I noticed you are from Ballston Spa, NY. I have my rigs serviced at Heid's in Johnsburg, NY just a stone's throw from you.

Perhaps we can do a few rides together this summer?

Hello David,
Have you had any problems with the brakes heating up?
I have had slight problems with mine under extreme conditions.
To help with the problem, I try to use the engine more for both acceleration and deceleration.

Its probably over design, and not the first time I've been accused of that. One caliper will be hooked to the fornt brake and one to the rear.

I can take NO CREDIT for the machine work, just wanted to make that clear and thank all that have had a hand in this.

I did measure it, but don't recall right now. It's about as wide as my Dodge pickup (full size)

Doc replied that his EML/BMW K1100 was,

I learned that 'rule of thumb' in Seattle, WA parking my Summit rig curbside. If I just imagined that I was driving a full size PU and I wouldn't scuff the tires on the curb. Moron Alert

No, I have not experienced any problems with the brakes on the Bandito yet, but I have not really been riding under "extreme conditions" yet, either. Just was wondering about having all the calipers on half the rotors, you've got a lot less area to dissipate the heat generated. And it's stuck inside of this big car wheel, not out in the airstream like the original dual discs were (before sidecar modifications). Your comments make me believe that my thoughts might have some relation to reality. Some sort of air scoop might help the braking situation, while probably adding a lot more air drag all the rest of the time....

Aside from the question of heat, I certainly can see the advantage of engaging the sidecar brake with either the front or rear bike brake, I imagine it will minimize the steering to the left when engaging only the front brake. Any change in the master cylinder?
