What shocks do you prefer and why?
Penske, Ohlins, Works performance, White Power, etc.
Considering upgrading my shocks, Need to do a bunch of research.
My rear shock and sidecar shock have no compression dampening.
And limited rebound dampening.
Penske looks good and so does Ohlins. _________________ Bill

Penske was very helpfull in building the rear shock for my bike. I sent them the old shock to copy and measure spring rate and then modified from there. The first spring was slightly larger diameter and rubbed the tire so they changed it, no charge, I paid shipping to them, they covered shipping back.
As long as you don't damage the spring they will keep changing it until you get a rate you're happy with.
My opinion, others will vary

I've heard from several friends, that Penske is the best performance bang for the buck, rivalling or even besting Ohlins in quality for what you get. Third hand info for me - I haven't ever bought an aftermarket shock retail before...
I've got an elderly, vintage unknown, more than likely needing a rebuild by now Fox Twin-Clicker with Eibach 800lb spring on the bandit i lucked into as a second-hand hand-me-down freebee... that was a radical improvement over the stock shock, for what was then considered in the budget niche of aftermarket shocks (along with progressive suspension). Fox is now out of the aftermarket motorcycle shock business, providing support for existing customers only.
I'm such a cheap ass, i'm recycling the stock Bandit Shock into the new sidecar suspension _________________ Homebrew '99 Suzuki Bandit 1200 / '88 Hannigan Comet

Bummer. I had great success with Fox in the past. Needed rebuilding every year or two, but that's normal for any shock.
Fox is probably selling so many mountain bike forks/shocks these days that they don't have time to make low-margin motorcycle parts. |
