Back to the original topic, got the new Penske shock mounted and have put a couple hundred miles on it. Have not yet messed with any of the adjustments.

Its already an improvement over the worn out stock shock, no more pogoing after hitting a bump.

It's a lttle harsh over small bumps and I'm getting a little more roll in corners than before, so I'm thinking I need to take the preload up a little and maybe back off the compression. The plan is to do one at a time and take notes. The new shock has a 450 lb spring rate, compared to 490 on the old.

My fear is that having three things to adjust on the shock has tripled (or maybe cubed) my chances of hosing it up........... Embarassed Big Grin

That is a good plan Mike. Adjustments are good but you can dial yourself right out of the ballpark if you don't know where you were and where you are.

Don't forget where you're going.

Ralph,

Even before adding the sway bar I never I never had the old spring off of the lighest preload setting. The 450 lb spring was the next lighter one that Bruce could come up with.

What rate spring did you use on the back of Jay's bike?

The hope is that with the sway bar to control roll I could get a better ride with a lighter spring. In all my reading about my old Trans Am and handling there seems to be two camps, the light springs, big sway bar camp, and the big springs, little sway bar group. I'm trying the little spring/adding a sway bar approach.

Since he offered to change it out with another 490 spring if I'm not happy I thought it worth the try.

Haven't measured sag yet, but will hopefully do it this weekend.

Mike

Well on Jays bike I had Bruce add 450 lb to what ever the stock spring was and on mine I had him add 400 lbs to what ever the stock rate was.
I have no Ideal what the spring rate is. never ask besides it would not be the same. I go by my butt and how the bike works. Feel and what works.

Bill look at the Penske link and it will tell you how to set up the sag. It will be diff for each bike and rider.

I understand what sag is on a two wheeler, but do you think it should be the same amount on a bike with a sidecar?
The web site gives you a dimension, rule of thumb. Question

I'am using the stock spring on mine, I have no idea what the spring rate is, I am very happy with it. Motorcycle Happy

Yes. Sag should be the same for pretty much all vehicles - about 25% to 30% of total suspension travel.

- Less than 20%-25% and performance will suffer on dips/potholes - the suspension will top out.

- More than 30% and there's not enogh suspension travel left to deal with bumps, and you'll bottom out.

Basically you want to arrange your spring rate and preload to use all of your available travel, but never bottom out or top out. (If you don't hit the limit once in a while, you probably aren't using all of the available travel - but it shouild only be occasionally, like once every few days of riding).

Thanks Paul, I don't know how to explain what I feel or what makes it work But you seem to have that covered Cool Thanks

"I'am using the stock spring on mine, I have no idea what the spring rate is, I am very happy with it. "

Bill If you had a good shock with rebound and comp damping on it it would be twice as good. " Cool But what the hell do I know. I just work at the car wash.

Yesterday set the sag at a hair over 7/8 inch. It was about 1 and 1/4 inch. Didn't mess with anything else, seemed a little less harsh over small bumps Question Want to put a few moew miles on before I say for sure.
